New Landscape Architecture Students
Welcome to the Department of Landscape Architecture at the University of Oregon!
I’m excited to meet you and so are our faculty and supportive administrative staff and advisors. I recently had the opportunity to host a faculty brownbag (lunch) with our first and second year graduate students to learn more about faculty research, and, Wow!, we’re doing amazing things. Faculty research has a direct impact on student learning opportunities, both in lecture and studio, as well as research opportunities. The range of interest spans landscape history and aesthetics, landscape value through dystopian fashion, perception and commodification of forests, treatment, use, and reuse of water in our newest global crisis, islands as microcosms of urban development during climate change, effects of gardens on microbial health, wildfire resilience, community gardens, community empowerment through equitable urban park design, urban agriculture to conquer food insecurity, and impact of landscape on displaced, underrepresented populations. When translated into student work in capstone projects, studio reviews, and master’s projects, I see students fully grasping the value of landscape architecture to address the wicked problems you will face throughout your career. We value a culture of testing, experimenting, and experiential learning from day one. On that note, I invited our DEI committee to also welcome you,
On behalf of the Landscape Architecture DEI Committee, we welcome you to the Department of Landscape Architecture. We are committed to confronting issues of systemic inequity to promote diversity and representation in the built environment. The DEI committee is committed to creating an equitable and accessible academic experience for all students. You now have access to the Landscape Architecture Resource Canvas Page, which contains resources to help you succeed as a designer and student. The DEI committee is here to help you navigate the journey of becoming a successful designer. If you are interested in getting involved in the DEI committee, please join us at our bi-weekly meetings. Please do not hesitate to contact the DEI Chair at ladeichair@uoregon.edu for any questions or guidance. We look forward to meeting you and working together to create a most just and equitable future!
We all work together to make positive change daily, in the classroom, hallways, and local/global communities. I hope you seize the opportunity over the next few years to pull in new knowledge and make new friends from all corners of the University of Oregon. Keep in touch!
